I Like Big Books…

Of course it arrives for me at the library a week and a half before I leave, but then, that’s how my luck works out. But because I’ve been waiting for  Words of Radiance, the second installment of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive since I finished the first one, I just went for it. I guess I will read what I can of it before I head to London, and read the rest when I get home. It is not coming with me. At just under 1100 pages and 2.75 inches thick, it is only a little smaller and lighter than all of the camera gear I’m taking. As a minimalist traveler, I have decided it is simply too big. And it’s a library book. I’m not taking the chance of leaving it behind.

There is something about huge books that makes them both compelling and repelling.  On one hand, they’re huge and unwieldy and as you look at it, as it takes all the space on the shelf, you wonder if the author couldn’t have taken out just a few more words…

But then you open it up, read the first few pages, and if the author has written a compelling story, by the time you get to the end,  you wonder if the author couldn’t have written a few more words because it’s a long time before the next one comes out.

It’s the curse of epic fantasy series. It’s always so long before the next one comes out.
