Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme where we randomly select a book from our Goodreads To Be Read list and share it with the world. It’s hosted by Lauren’s Page Turners, so be sure to link back to her site so that we can all see what everyone plans to read!
The Last of the Wine
by Mary Renault
Historical Fiction/LGBTQIA
400 pages
First published in 1956
From Goodreads: In The Last of the Wine, two young Athenians, Alexias and Lysis, compete in the palaestra, journey to the Olympic games, fight in the wars against Sparta, and study under Socrates. As their relationship develops, Renault expertly conveys Greek culture, showing the impact of this supreme philosopher whose influence spans epochs.
Thanks to Hilary Mantel’s superlative Thomas Cromwell trilogy, my interest in historical fiction has been growing. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Mary Renault’s books- particularly The Last of the Wine and The King Must Die, so I will definitely have to give this one a try.
