January 27, 2019January 27, 2019 / Kim @ Traveling in Books / 5 Comments

It was a cold and snowy week here in windblown Nebraska. I put the knit wool cap I bought on the Irish island of Inis Mór to good use, and though a coworker jokingly called me "Tiny Kim", my head stayed nice and warm on those frigid, blustery days. Really, I don't mind being compared … Continue reading Sunday Sum Up, 01/27/2019

This is a little later than usual today. I was out late last night and slept in this morning. Why was I out late? I went to see a movie for the first time in ages! I'm planning to go see another one later this week. Whoa! More about the movies later. This week was … Continue reading Sunday Sum Up, 01/06/2019

I'm tired. I'm really tired. I've worked six days in a row and have two more to go. Fortunately, the next two days are shorter than the others, or I might have screamed. I've been trying to get into the holiday spirit this past week, but I just can't. I'm tired, I'm sick of dealing … Continue reading Sunday Sum Up 12/23/2018

As 2018 draws to a close, we all look back at the things we did and try to figure out the best and worst of it all. With 155 books read so far this year, I have a lot of titles that I read and loved. Unsurprisingly, most of these books are fantasy or science … Continue reading Top Books of 2018

A little late today. I drove up to my sister's house last night to watch the NCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship game between Nebraska and Stanford. I was, of course, cheering for Nebraska, but sadly they couldn't pull off winning the championship for the second straight year. They lost to Stanford in five … Continue reading Sunday Sum Up, 12/16/2018

It's been a cold and gloomy week around here, capped by a weekend of snow, ice, and rain. And just as it happens every year, I did not get to spend my lone day off relaxing. I had to do a bunch of adulting, which included most of an hour spent on hold. Not … Continue reading Sunday Sum-Up

Another quick post today! Thanksgiving has already come and gone, and now I'm into my busiest time of year at work. I'll be working six days a week from now until Christmas unless this snowstorm forces us to close for the day. I will find out soon... In other news, I made it to … Continue reading Sunday Sum Up

It's been a week of things not going quite to plan.  WordPress decided it didn't like me at all when, after I spent an hour writing the first part of this week's Lord of the Rings Reread post, it disappeared. Completely disappeared. I have no idea where it went, but for some reason, it didn't … Continue reading Sunday Sum-Up

There are some days when getting up is the last thing you want to do. For me, that day was yesterday when, facing a busy day at work and wintry weather, my cat curled up beside me in bed and started purring as loudly as he possibly could. Readers, it took every bit of willpower … Continue reading Sunday Sum-Up

So it's been a minute. It's been an up and down couple of weeks, and my mind and mood haven't been set toward reading or blogging. That's not to say I haven't been doing anything at all. Quite the contrary. I've been spending time with my bookclub friends, went to see another friend's new … Continue reading Sunday Sum-Up

And overnight, I lose a bunch of followers, thanks to Instagram getting rid of bot accounts. I mean, good riddance to them, but why make an IG bot to begin with? . Anyway, I got this beautiful copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray for Christmas, and I am planning to reread it in the next couple of weeks. . . . #thepictureofdoriangray #oscarwilde #books #beautifulbooks #bookstagram #instabook #doriangray #tbr #toread
I started reading Ice by Anna Kavan today. It's a strange science fiction/dystopian novel about a man searching for an abused woman while trying to keep clear of totalitarian authorities as a climate catastrophe unfolds around them. It is strange and a little disturbing. I am about a third of the way through, so will withhold judgement until I am farther into it. Has anyone else read this? What did you think of it? . . . #annakavan #slipstreamfiction #sff #books #reading #amreading #instabook #bookstagram #britishauthors #sciencefiction
I've been feeling uninspired when it comes to bookish photos lately. I'm going to take some photos today, though, and see if the spark comes back. . . . #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookish #senseandsensibility #janeausten #booknerd #booklove
Part of my February reading plan is to get through some of the books I got for Christmas, especially Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner. And who can resist Jane Austen? . . . #books #tbr #toread #sistersofthewinterwood #senseandsensibility #janeausten #bookstack #booklove #bookstagram #queensofrenthia #jadecity #pictureofdoriangray
It's not as cold here as it is in other parts of the Midwest, but the -19F windchill still makes me want stay in bed and read all day. Or bake. . I bought this beautiful hardcover copy of Elizabeth Kostova's book The Shadow Land on clearance for about $6. I've read The Historian, but nothing else by her. Has anyone else read it? What did you think about it? . . . #books #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #theshadowland #beautifulbooks #tbr #elizabethkostova #toread #instabook #booklove
I just finished Linnea Harsuyker's excellent historical fiction novel, The Half-Drowned King last night. It's set in 9th century Norway before the rise of Harald Fairhair, the first King of Norway. The characters are deep and complex, and everything feels true to the time and place. The second book in the trilogy is The Sea Queen, and I am looking forward to reading it! . . #linneahartsuyker #thehalfdrownedking #historicalfiction #books #tbr #booknerd #bookworm #instabook
